There have been so many horrible events recently that continue to shine the light on the problem of racism in our country. As I’ve been reflecting on many news stories over the past month and talking to others, I’m recognizing lies the enemy is trying to feed me. So I’m fighting back by shining a light on those lies, and replacing them with a truth. If you’d like, share the lies you are hearing and the truths that combat those lies in the comments. LIE: My voice doesn’t matter/There are already plenty of voices speaking out. TRUTH: Proverbs 31:8-9 “Speak up for the people who have no voice, for the rights of all the down-and-outers. Speak out for justice! Stand up for the poor and destitute!” THOUGHTS: I always thought that black men and women had a voice equal to mine, but now I realize that though it should be […]
He Restores My Soul
The past couple months have been really busy for us. With our 3 little ones home from school and my husband and I trying to stay on top of a busy work season, plus finishing up all the final details before publishing my book, we’ve been feeling a bit worn down. It is easy in times of busyness, or fear, or exhaustion, to look for ways to restore or recharge ourselves. I tend to look for short funny videos on Youtube or a good fantasy or sci-fi audiobook that I can play while doing other things. Those are my favorite “escapisms.” I haven’t had a whole lot of time for those forms of escapism lately, but I also haven’t had much time for my traditional quiet times either. Our little ones are not deterred even by locked doors, rest times, or bedtimes and most of the moments when they are […]
Digging in the Dirt and Planting Good Seeds
Here in Georgia, we are well into spring. Flowers and trees are starting to bloom and yellow pollen is everywhere. Spring has always been my favorite season. There is so much beauty and expectation of growth. It is the time of year that makes me want to dig in the dirt and plant things. Unfortunately, I have proven that I don’t have a green thumb, so my budget for plants is restricted. My children also get excited to plant things this time of year. I bought some seeds for them but we need to go buy the soil, since what we have around here in the ground is red clay, and the seeds need some softer soil mixed in. With the kids home from school indefinitely, we’ve been given extra time to pour important truths into their hearts. One of the things we’ve been talking about with them is planting […]
Passover, Easter, and COVID-19
Passover began today at sundown. It is a time to remember how God delivered the Jewish people out of slavery in Egypt and led them to the Promised Land. As I thought about this story, I realized it has some interesting parallels to what our world is going through today with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all living a stripped-down life in one way or another right now. Nothing is like it used to be. We are crying out to God to save us and send relief. There is sickness and financial loss and death. Some days we may feel like the Isrealites did as they wandered in the desert. Many of us are remembering what life was like before, and longing for “the good ol’ days,” regardless of how “good” they actually were. Compared to right now, those days seem way better! We grumble and complain that we can’t […]
Words: Theology, Faith, and Belief
As I’ve written and edited my book over the past months, I’ve thought a great deal about the ideas of theology, faith, and belief. How do they overlap? In what ways are they different? As I’ve considered the weight and connotations of each of these words in my own life, I find that though they have similar meanings, they are quite different, at least, for me. For example, the word theology by definition (and in my own life) has a connotation of education and study. Theology also has a connotation of certainty. I’m recognizing that it has a physical weight and size attached to it in my life—not literally, but as I feel the word in my head. It has a weight to it. It is dense and heavy, and feels like a solid medal around my neck – perhaps like a metal medallion. The weight of it holds me […]
Partnering With God – A Family Business
One of the main ways God works on earth is in partnership with us. Not because He needs us involved, but because He wants us to have the opportunity and because we have been given the authority. God gave me a picture of how He wants to partner with us. The picture was of God as our Father, bringing us into His family business. In the family business, God is our boss. But as God is our good Father, there is a close relationship. The family business is not only His business, but it is also our inheritance. But you see, we have a choice. Do we want to be in business with our Father? Now, He knows the best way to run the business. And He’s never stuck in the past way of doing things. He is always aware of what is coming in the future and knows the […]
